Anniversary Film

What exactly is the Language Centre? Which services does it provide and how are these perceived by various members of the University community?

Under the motto "A small world which unlocks many worlds", the Language Centre has been offering various services in academic contexts for 10 years. In this film members of the University community from all the Faculties report on their experiences with the Language Centre.

In the 10 years, 15 632 students and 1 580 employees attended 2 259 courses in up to 18 languages. Language Centre offers are exclusively for University members and alumni. Our goal is to promote and support internationalisation, mobility and linguistic integration.

Besides the extensive course programme, the emphasis is on the following activities:

  • In collaboration with the Faculties, subject-specific courses are offered (e.g. Français médical).
  • Since the spring semester 2013, special courses have been offered in the PhD programme.
  • With an extensive "German as a Foreign Language" programme (which includes a "Summer Intensive Programme"), we support students who do not speak German.
  • In addition our offer includes an immersion course for Swiss students who did not receive their prior education in German.
  • A multilingual course has been on offer for the first time since the spring semester 2012.
  • In the autumn semester 2011 a study was conducted on the topic of multilingualism. Results can be found here.

We are pleased that, in the coming years, we will have the opportunity in the small world of the Language Centre to further enable students and university employees through need-oriented offers to acquire competences which will open many worlds to them.
